Van Buren County Schools went into lockdown early Friday morning due to student reports of a gun on the bus.
After investigation by Administration and Law Enforcement, a toy gun located in the back window of a vehicle in the school parking lot was identified as the gun in question.
Younger students had heard portions of a conversation between older students on the bus talking about a gun. The circumstances resulted in the younger children stating they “heard there was a gun on the bus.”
A public statement was issued by Van Buren County Director of Schools after lockdown was removed.
“We can explain why we did too much, but can never explain why we did not do enough,” School Director Jared Copeland wrote in closing his public statement.
