The woodworking products of Van Buren County FFA are becoming known far and wide.
Ag Teacher Lance Smith said the FFA has picnic tables and shooting benches now available to order. He said the pieces are heavy duty and well-made to the point that they are kept busy keeping the orders filled.
“A couple of years ago we had a guy bought a shooting bench,” Smith said. “He said his buddy from Vermont loved it so much, he’d come down and shot with him. He said he loved it so much that he wants one too. So we ended up building another one for this guy to take to Vermont to his buddy. So we’ve stuff from as far away as Vermont.”
Smith said the FFA students make a variety of picnic tables sizes from six to twelve feet. He said they make shooting benches as well as a variety of benches including the type you would put in your garden or gazebo.
Smith said everything they build is pressure treated meaning it is made to withstand the outdoor environment. He said the additionally tend to build on the heavy side so it lasts longer and is more durable. He said they screw and bolt their wood furniture to make sure it stays together.
“We build these things right because they represent us, the school, the county, and the kids that do it,” Smith said.
Smith said there are additional items that they receive requests for such as swings and corn-hole boards. He said most items are a set design, but they do provide some custom options on corn-hole boards.
