Gainesboro’s American Legion Post 129 will honor America with a flag retirement ceremony Tuesday Morning.
Post 129 Adjutant Everette VanHooser said during the ceremony they will retire U.S. flags that are no longer in usable condition. He said disposing of flags in the proper way to show respect is very important to the American Legion.
“It’s important for the flags, the ones that are worn and tattered, it’s important that we dispose of them in a proper way,” VanHooser said. “It also brings the community together, shows them the respect that the flag needs to be shown.”
VanHooser said flags are retired in a burn barrel with assistance from veterans, boy scouts, and girl scouts. He said the Jackson County High School band will be playing patriotic music during the ceremony.
VanHooser said the service will take place Tuesday at 11 am at the Gainesboro Town Square. He said he hopes those attending will leave with a newfound respect for the flag and what it represents.
“We are trying to do something for the community and trying to make the community aware of the sacrifices that were given by the military folks,” VanHooser said. “So that we can honor that flag.”
VanHooser said he hopes people gain new respect and knowledge of the Boy and Girl Scouts, and The American Legion and what they all represent as well
