Downtown Living Could Gain Momentum With Cookeville Development

Downtown living in Cookeville a trend that Cookeville Cityscape expects to gain momentum.

Some 60 units planned off Spring Street. The Cookeville City Council on first reading approved rezoning the Builder’s Supply property to allow the development this month.

Cityscape Executive Director Lorie Krauss said she sees downtown living as an option that young people want.

“We’re within walking distance our downtown WestSide from Tennessee Tech University,” Krauss said. “We have vendors and store owners that employ lots of tech students, so that is a big draw.”

Krauss said the downtown revitalization group supports downtown living. Krauss said she believes that the project will bring more people and focus spending at local restaurants and shops.

“Cityscape is accredited by Downtown Mainstreet Association which is funded through Tennessee Economic and Rural Development, and so, we have the economic community development component,” Krauss said. “With that, we are all about bringing people into our downtown areas. Cookeville is special that we have two distinct downtown areas with the courthouse square and the downtown WestSide Depot area.”

Krauss said the walkability aspect of living downtown one of the main appeals that she hears.
