Opponents Set For Boys High School Championships

Three Upper Cumberland boys teams now have opponents as the TSSAA set the pairings for the Tennessee Boys Basketball Championships Tuesday.

Monterey and Clay County stand among the eight 1A boys teams fighting for a state championship. The (21-12) Bulldogs will play Wednesday night at 6pm in the top half of the bracket, facing (30-1) Douglass. The Red Devils out of Memphis have won 27 straight games. The last loss came December 1 to Cordova. A high-scoring offense, Douglass has topped 85 points in five post-season games including 98 points in the sectional game.

All games will be played at MTSU’s Murphy Center in Murfreesboro.

The (30-6) Monterey Wildcats play in the bottom half of the bracket Thursday morning. The matchup with (22-7) MASE, the Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering, will tip off at 10am. Four of MASE’s seven losses have come to Clay County opponent Douglass including two in the post-season.

With two wins, Monterey and Clay County could face off Saturday afternoon. It would be the fourth time this season, this time for the state championship.

The 2A bracket features Livingston Academy in an opening game at 2:45pm next Thursday. The (25-9) Wildcats face (22-10) Alcoa. The Tornadoes advanced with a road win at Grainger Monday night 72-64.
