Crossville Discussing Possible Changes To Animal Control Ordinance

Crossville city officials have discussed some possible changes to its animal control ordinance.

The current ordinance enforces state law, which restricts tethering a dog in a way that results in bodily injury or when the temperature is below 32 degrees and above 90.

“We understand what the state law says, but I honestly feel, as a courtesy, that we should sit down and talk about dog tetheirng a little bit more and in general, humane treatment of animals,” Harris said. “Perhaps we could look at maybe improving our ordinances without being too restrictive.

In March, the council failed to pass a measure that would have disallowed tethering of dogs between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and during the day for no longer than 8 hours at a time.

Crossville Animal Control Officer Wiley Potter said there are concerns about tethering and he writes citations when needed.

“I try to educate people and work with people,” Potter said, “and if they don’t do what I ask them to do, I cite them to court. You try to work with people, but sometimes they just don’t understand.”

The council plans to hold more discussions on the issue in the near future.
